Privacy Policy

Obalint Limited ("Obalint", "we", "us") runs Obalint.ai, a conflict and security intelligence platform. This policy explains what personal data we collect when you use Obalint.ai, why we collect it, who it is shared with, and the choices you have. We have tried to write it in plain language.

The short version

We collect what we need to run your account and answer your questions: your email, your name, the countries you watch and your chats. We do not sell your data or use it for advertising. Your questions are sent to AI providers to produce answers, so keep personal details out of them. You can ask us to delete or export your data at any time by email.

01 / WHAT WE COLLECT

Account details

When you create an account we collect your email address, your first and last name, and a password. We never store your password itself, only a one-way hash that cannot be turned back into the password. If you sign in with Google, we do not receive a password at all.

Onboarding choices

The role you select (for example journalist or analyst) and the countries you add to your watchlist.

Account activity

When your account was created, when you last signed in, when you confirmed your email, and when you finished onboarding.

AI Chat

The questions you ask, the answers you receive, and the news sources cited in each answer. We keep these so you can return to your conversations. A conversation's title is the start of your first question.

Sign in with Google

If you choose it, Google gives us your email address, your name and a Google account identifier. We ask only for basic profile information (openid, email and profile). We do not receive your Google password and we do not keep Google access tokens.

Technical data

Our servers record routine information about requests, such as your IP address, the page requested, your browser type and the time. We also receive error reports when something breaks. Our network provider (Cloudflare) sees your IP address and request details because it delivers the site to you.

A question typed on our home page

If you type a question on the home page before signing up, it is saved only in your own browser (local storage) for up to 24 hours. It is not sent to us until you create an account and choose to ask it.

We do not currently take payments, so we do not collect payment details. If that changes, we will update this policy first.

02 / HOW WE USE YOUR DATA

  • to create and secure your account, sign you in and keep you signed in
  • to provide the service, including answering your questions and showing news and events for your countries
  • to send emails that are part of the service: confirming your email address, resetting your password, and telling you when your password has changed
  • to protect the service from abuse, for example by limiting how fast requests can be made
  • to find and fix errors and keep the service running
  • to understand, in aggregate, how the service is used (see section 6)
  • to meet legal obligations

We do not sell your personal data. We do not use it for advertising. We do not currently send marketing emails.

Where the law requires a legal basis, ours are: performing our agreement with you (providing your account and the service), our legitimate interests (security, reliability and improving the service), your consent where we ask for it, and legal obligations.

03 / AI PROCESSING

When you ask a question, we send the following to our AI providers to generate the answer: the text of your question, the last few messages of that conversation, and relevant excerpts from news sources we hold. We do not send your name, email address, account ID or IP address.

Our AI providers are DeepSeek (a China-based provider) and Anthropic (United States), which we use or may use for AI Chat. Because your question is sent to them, please do not type personal information that you do not want shared. They handle that data under their own terms and privacy policies.

Obalint.ai summarises public news reporting. Answers can be incomplete or wrong, so check the sources listed with each answer.

04 / WHO ELSE RECEIVES YOUR DATA

We use these service providers to run Obalint.ai. They process data on our behalf.

  • DigitalOcean hosts our servers and database in Frankfurt, Germany.
  • Cloudflare delivers the website, protects it from attacks and may provide aggregate, cookie-free usage statistics. It operates a global network and sees your IP address and request details.
  • Resend sends our emails. It receives your email address and first name. Its servers are in Ireland.
  • Sentry receives error reports from our website and servers, configured to leave out IP addresses, cookies and request contents. Its servers are in the European Union.
  • DeepSeek and Anthropic receive your questions as described in section 3.
  • Google if you choose to sign in with Google.

We also fetch news from third-party news providers. They do not receive your personal data.

We may disclose data if the law requires it, to protect people or the service, or as part of a sale or reorganisation of our business, in which case we will tell you.

05 / WHERE YOUR DATA IS STORED

Our servers, database and email provider are in Germany and Ireland. Cloudflare runs a global network, and our AI providers may process data in other countries, including China and the United States. Where the law requires safeguards for sending data abroad, we rely on appropriate protections such as contracts with our providers.

06 / COOKIES AND SIMILAR TECHNOLOGIES

We use only these:

  • Session cookie (strictly necessary): keeps you signed in. It ends after 7 days of inactivity or 30 days in total.
  • Google sign-in security cookie (strictly necessary): protects the sign-in process and lasts 10 minutes.
  • Sidebar and theme cookies (preferences): remember whether your sidebar is collapsed and your colour theme. They last one year.
  • Saved home page question (local storage): described in section 1, kept up to 24 hours.

We do not use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies. To understand how the service is used in aggregate, we use or may use Cloudflare Web Analytics, which does not use cookies and does not track you across other sites.

07 / HOW LONG WE KEEP YOUR DATA

We keep your account data and your AI Chat history for as long as your account exists. If you ask us to delete your account, we will delete your account details and chat history within 30 days, except where we must keep something for legal or security reasons. Data may remain in backups for a limited period until they expire. Routine server logs are kept only for a limited time under normal log rotation.

08 / YOUR RIGHTS

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:

  • ask for a copy of your personal data
  • have inaccurate data corrected
  • have your data deleted
  • receive your data in a portable format
  • object to or ask us to restrict certain processing
  • withdraw consent where we rely on it
  • complain to your data protection authority

To use any of these rights, email obalint.ai@gmail.com from the address on your account. We aim to reply within 30 days. We are building self-service tools for deleting your account and exporting your data. Until they are available, please email us and we will do it for you.

We handle personal data in line with applicable data protection law, including the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 and, where they apply, the GDPR and UK GDPR.

09 / SECURITY

We use encrypted connections (HTTPS), store passwords only as hashes, keep sign-in cookies out of reach of page scripts, limit the rate of requests and restrict who can access our systems. No system is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.

10 / CHILDREN

Obalint.ai is built for professional and research use and is not directed at children under 18. If you believe a child has given us personal data, contact us and we will delete it.

11 / CHANGES TO THIS POLICY

If we change this policy we will update the date at the top. If a change is significant, we will tell you in the service or by email.
